Atlanta Buddhist Meditation Center

Mahamevnawa Buddhist Monastery, a registered 501(c)(3) non profit organization, is a place for everyone, regardless of background or experience, to learn and practice the ancient teachings of the Buddha. We believe that by learning and practicing the teachings of the Buddha, the individual gains peace and happiness that is not tied to the ups and downs of ordinary life. With us, you will discover a like-minded community of people who are interested in finding happiness that is not based on endless consuming and accumulating more and more things. Our Monastery is one of the branches of the first monastery established in Sri Lanka. Mahamevnawa, meaning “Great Cloud Monastery,” was the name of the and the place where Arahant Mahinda Thero first introduced the Buddha’s teachings to Sri Lanka. We welcome you with open arms & warm hearts to our Monastery.

Our Teacher and The Founder of Mahamevnawa Monastic Order

Ven. Kiribathgoda Gnanananda Thero is the founder of Mahamevnawa Buddhist Monastery. He was ordained on 26 March 1979 at the age of 17, under Dambagssare Sumedhankara Thero and Dikwelle Pannananda Thero at Seruwavila. He received a traditional Buddhist academic education and entered the University of Sri Jayawardenepura. Having understood the inability to achieve what he wanted in a university, he quit and started visiting meditation centres and hermitages.

His deep practices of meditation and the understanding of Buddhist philosophy later, led him to start up his own Buddhist monastery, Mahamevnawa in Polgahawela, Sri Lanka

Meditate With A Monk - Zoom

This meditation group is good for anyone interested in practicing meditation,
mindfulness, and learning the teachings of the Buddha.
Classes are every Sunday 7:00pm-8:30pm EST and free of charge.

Children’s program focuses on the development of love and compassion for all beings, as well as simple meditation. The goal is to help children develop the foundation of a mindful and successful life.

Important Notice!

The regular Saturday meditation program at our monastery in Woodstock on September 14 has been canceled because we are holding an in-person meditation program at the Northwest Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Sandy Springs on the same day.

Due to upcoming Katina ceremonies, we are unable to host Saturday night meditation for the next 4 Saturdays (October 12, 19, 26, and November 2) as the Sangha members will be out of town to participate in Katina ceremonies in other temples.
